Healthcare systems across Europe are under increasing pressure, driven by rising numbers of overweight and obese children and adults. For the foreseeable future these rates are only set to rise, leading to one of the most significant public health challenges we face today.

Obesity, often driven by poor nutrition and nutritional choices, increases the risk of a range of serious health conditions, including digestive cancers and liver disease.

Healthy balanced diets and lifestyles can help prevent chronic digestive diseases. The difficulty is ensuring citizens make the right choices in following these lifestyles. This report details the case for change and a plan of how, with the right mix of public health interventions, improved nutrition can be delivered across the European continent. 

An unprecedented opportunity exists to develop food systems as a common thread between many international, national and business policy frameworks aiming for improved health and environmental sustainability. Establishing clear, scientific targets to guide food system transformation is an important step in realising this opportunity.
