This tragic story shows the need for better awareness and recognition of the serious nutritional risks of severely restricted diets.
More importantly (as these parents are now campaigning for), both regular testing, and prompt nutritonal intervention and management for such children is urgently needed, which health services are currently able to provide.

NB: Vitamin A deficiency is not the only essential nutrient deficiency that can cause or contribute to irreversible damage to the brain and nervous system - because ALL essential nutrients are just that: essential.
Serious omega-3 and/or Vitamin B12 deficiencies can also permanently impair vision, hearing and motor control. So can deficiencies of iodine - particularly in early life.
