7 Sept 2012 - Nutraingredients - Amino Acid Supplements may offer autism promise

by Nathan Gray

Intake of common nutritional supplements containing amino acids could help to combat a unique form of autism, according to new research published in the journal Science.

The study links certain types of autism to a genetic mutation that speeds up the metabolism of certain amino acids.

Led by Professor Joseph Gleeson from the University of California, San Diego, the international team of researchers then revealed that mice with the same genetic mutation had eased neurobehavioural symptoms and reduced levels of associated epilepsy when fed a supplement containing added amino acids.
