Abstract:

There is evidence of co-morbidity in the neurodevelopmental disorders and they display depletion of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in their plasma and red cell membranes. This suggests an abnormal fatty acid metabolism, which may affect cell signalling and synthesis of eicosanoids.

This common feature in the neurodevelopmental disorders may be genetic in origin: however, oxidative stress may also contribute to decreased PUFAs found in these disorders.
