FAB Research and NHS Collaboration

Driving impactful research in the field of nutritional psychiatry, and putting it into practice

FAB are delighted to finally announce this long-awaited formal collaboration with Dr Kevin Williamson, NHS Consultant Nutritionist and Clinical Academic, of RDasH NHS trust. This is a big positive step in right direction for food and behaviour research, and its practical implications for healthcare, with the support of experienced NHS professionals.

This new 'chapter' has been opened due to the awarding of a prestigious grant to Dr Kevin Williamson, whose work is based at 'The Centre for Nutrition and Behaviour' (CNB) situated within RDaSH NHS Trust. Kevin has been awarded this highly competitive DSE grant to fund research in the field of Nutritional Psychiatry, which involves a research placement with FAB Research.

If you are new to hearing about this unique collaboration, please find out more by watching this short video clip from Kevin himself:

Aims of the collaboration

Dr Kevin Williamson will be working closely with FAB Research to help leverage collaborations that lead to an impactful programme of research, bringing real benefit to patients experiencing mental health difficulties and related health challenges.

Over the duration of the collaboration we hope to:

  • Improve awareness of nutritional psychiatry & engage and explore the views and priorities of public contributors.
  • Build a network of interested individuals willing to support the development of research to co-produce research protocols and grant applications, both with professionals and people with lived in experience.
  • Conduct world-class research on the links between nutrition and behaviour and help to translate this research into clinical practice
  • Develop & deliver professional education & training opportunities in nutritional psychiatry.
  •  Expand the capacity of the NHS to deliver evidence-based interventions related to diet and mental health.

Given the substantial evidence linking diet and mental health, upcoming projects under this collaboration will aim to put this knowledge into practice, ultimately improving the wellbeing of patients with mental health conditions.

This initiative will also emphasise the importance of achievable dietary changes, as well as the role of interdisciplinary healthcare professionals in supporting these changes.

Kevin's History with FAB Research

Earlier in his career, Kevin’s pioneering work with Professor Malcolm Peet first brought him into contact with FAB Research.

This included his contributions to the UK Parliamentary Food and Health Forum (FHF) Inquiry into the links between Diet and Behaviour – and the role of nutrition in mental health. FAB Research and some of our very own Associate members were contributors to this paper as well - read the full report here.

Evidence for the importance of nutrition in psychiatric disorders, and the potential of nutritional and dietary interventions to provide a more cost-effective approaches to their prevention and management, has only continued to increase.
