Your go-to place for reliable, independent information on how food. diet and nutrition affect behaviour, mood, learning, and mental wellbeing
Welcome to FAB. We are a researcher-led charity dedicated to informing, educating and transforming lives through advancing and sharing findings from scientific research into the links between nutrition and human behaviour.
FAB recognises the urgent need to raise awareness of the fundamental role that food and diet play in supporting mental health, wellbeing and performance. To do that, we promote and support education and training, as well as world-leading research on the relationships between nutrition, brain function, and behaviour.
Our work spans a wide variety of different fields, linking together key findings on how nutrition can influence brain health and development, shaping both normal individual differences in behaviour, mood and learning, and various mental conditions or disorders.
We provide independent, evidence-based information on how food and diet affect brain function - for researchers and students, professionals, policymakers and the public. Our activities and platform also encourage collaboration, the transfer and sharing of knowledge, and the exchange of ideas to improve both scientific research and everyday practice.
FAB stays current with the latest leading-edge research, using this to help inform individuals, practitioners and policymakers on issues relevant to their interests.
By sharing our information and research with a wide and varied audience and drawing on their knowledge and expertise, we can help to inform and educate on workable strategies for improving nutrition to enhance both child development and mental health and wellbeing at any age.

Childhood neurodevelopmental conditions including ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, dyslexia, and dyspraxia.
Psychological and psychiatric conditions such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, self-harm and substance use disorders, and psychosis.
Age-related mental health conditions like dementia and other neurological disorders.
How can food, diet and nutrition affect mental wellbeing?
The increase in mental health conditions, including childhood neurodevelopmental disorders, psychological conditions, and age-related issues, is alarming.
Among the most common are:
The relentless rise in these conditions reflects many different factors, but increasing evidence shows diet is among them, highlighting the crucial role of nutrition in brain and nervous system development and functioning.
What’s more, food and diet are more easily modified than many other risk factors. Early intervention to improve nutrition can potentially prevent serious difficulties with mood, behaviour, and learning from developing; and dietary changes can often enhance the effectiveness of existing treatments.
If not properly managed, these conditions can severely limit individuals' opportunities, impacting society and the economy through effects on education, health, social services, and more.
Despite the recognition of nutrition's importance for physical health, its fundamental role in brain development, mental well-being, and performance is still too often overlooked. This is where FAB’s research, education and other activities are focused - on identifying the critical connections between food, diet, and mental health (which work both ways) – and developing better ways to apply these in practice.
